The Harris Tweed Act - the only fabric in the world governed by it's own Act of Parliament
"Handwoven by the islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides, finished in the Outer Hebrides, and made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides"
Originally this cloth was woven by crofters for their own use, now it's used by the most famous of designers worldwide, including Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood.
In 2012 the weavers and mills produced over 1 million meters of Harris Tweed, the highest quantity in over 17 years.
Each cloth is identified as authentic Harris Tweed only by the "Orb" stamp which is given after inspection by the Harris Tweed Authority. The "Orb" is the United Kingdoms oldest trademark.
